Don’t Go to Bed Angry and Other Myths

I recently made a big decision with my partner to live together and ever since I've been inundated with all sorts of advice from well-meaning relatives and loved ones.

However the one piece of advice that stuck out for all of us in the Topperland office was this: “Don’t go to bed angry”. As much as this sounds like a great piece of advice it’s rarely possible when you’re having a screaming argument at 3am about who’s going to do the dishes that gets well out of hand (not that that’s ever happened or anything). Sometimes you just need a break from each other for a few hours before you say something you’ll regret.

So with this in mind the ladies in the Topperland office have come up with our thoughts on how not to kill each other when you’re living together. Of course these are easier said than done but personally I think this is pretty solid advice.

Don’t stop dating

Just because you’re living together as a couple doesn't necessarily mean that you’ll be spending time with each other as a couple. Between work, family and friends your other half can be the last person you spend time with. Make sure you have a date night at least once a month just to spend some time together.

Don’t stop making an effort

Just because you’ve been exposed to each other’s morning breath doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make any effort at all. If one of you doesn’t make an effort anymore then the other won’t make an effort and then it just descends into arguments and feeling bad about yourself.

Give each other space

Just as you shouldn't stop dating you shouldn't crowd each other either. Everyone needs their space and you should be able to communicate openly and honestly with each other when you need some alone time.

If something’s bothering you talk about it

Communication in a relationship is hugely important and if you can’t talk openly and honestly to each other then it’s something you should really work on together. Whether something’s bothering you at the office or whether it’s your partner annoying the heck out of you, you should still be able to talk it out with each other.

Now there are loads more pieces of advice that we at Topperland could give but really it boils down to these four core pieces of advice.

Why not get in touch with us and let us know what advice you’ll be giving out or have you ever had some really bad advice?

We can’t wait to hear from you soon,
