Wedding Dresses Through the Decades 1970's and 1980's

1970’s weddings

The 1970's was an interesting era for wedding gowns as it changes so much through the decade. Starting the period with stiff tailoring and ending with a romantic country feel. 

The tailored look is perfectly captured here by Bianca Jagger who wore a white skirt suit.

1980’s wedding dresses

The 1980’s wedding fashions were interesting... The fashion in this decade was essentially puffy and satin and lace were over used and shares in hairspray were at their highest they'd ever been. However there were some gems from the 1980's such as this beautiful bride

Wedding Dresses Through the Decades 1950's and 1960's

1950’s weddings

This was a return to an age of prim and proper wedding dresses with waistlines being lowered and a feminine hourglass silhouette being created with nipped in waists and flared skirts. Often women would wear a shorter length dress with a flared petticoat underneath a la Audrey Hepburn.

The 1950's style of fashion has become iconic throughout the world and has since inspired designers to this day with the rockabilly trend in dresses and wedding dresses

1960's weddings

With revolution in the air again women’s fashion turned more casual with waistlines rising back up to an empire line and hair styles becoming more casual. Often wedding fashion was either maxi skirts or miniskirts

The hippy culture towards the end of the 1960's brought in more loose clothing and often medieval inspired wedding dresses such as this hippy style wedding dress

With all of these superhero films coming out and the recent peek at Chris Hemsworth behind the scenes of the upcoming Thor 2 looking as yummy as ever we thought we’d show you how to rock the comic book trend!

Wedding Dresses Through the Decades 1930's and 1940's

1930’s wedding

Due to the great depression in America women’s wedding dresses became much less ornate and more practical.  Hemlines were fairly short with wedding dresses looking more like female dress suits than like wedding gowns as women felt guilty spending too much money on their dress when money was scarce:

The key accessory during this period was definitely gloves as they would be worn with everything

1940’s wedding dress

In the 1940’s the return to glamour could be seen in wedding dresses with gorgeous empire cut gowns and women experimenting with silk and lace to create a gown to remember.There are still gowns based on these types of dresses being sold today but nothing can quite recreate the luxurious elegant feel of these gowns which were normally made by themselves with their family.

The 1940's were difficult times as material was often requisitioned by the army but still women would somehow find a way to have the dress of their dreams.
